Motorcycle community into PEV scene - JohnCC - August 5, 2026
Who else out there is here from the motorcycle community?
I have been riding motorcycles for over ten years now. It started as a weekend thing and then turned into my main way to get around town. Lately though I have been thinking about making a switch to something electric. It is not that I do not love my bike anymore but I keep asking myself why I am even considering this change.
Is it boredom? That is a tough one to admit. Maybe the thrill is not the same as it used to be. Or maybe it is just the practical stuff piling up. Insurance keeps going up every year and maintenance costs are getting harder to justify. With inflation the way it is right now every dollar counts and my gas bill alone makes me wince every time I fill up. Traffic is another big one. I sit there idling with the clutch pulled in and my left hand cramping up and I watch those little electric scooters zip right by me in the bike lane. It makes me wonder what I am doing.
I commute on my motorcycle almost every day. It saves me time over driving a car and parking is easier. But I am starting to question if that is still the best option. If I switch to something electric I am not even sure which one I would pick. Part of me thinks an electric motorcycle would be the smoothest transition because I would still feel like a rider. But then I look at e-bikes and scooters and see how much cheaper they are. And the EUCs or one wheel things look crazy but they seem so portable. I could just carry it inside with me instead of chaining up outside.
The biggest question I keep coming back to is whether I am just getting older and my priorities have shifted. When I was twenty five I wanted to be the fastest guy on the road. Now I am more worried about getting to work on time without sweating through my shirt. I also think about my kids and whether they would even be interested in gas bikes when they get older. The whole culture feels like it is changing.
I am curious if anyone else here is going through the same thing. Are you making the switch because you are bored with gas bikes or is it more about money and convenience? Do you still commute on two wheels or have you given that up entirely? And if you did switch what kind of PEV did you end up with and why that one over the others. I really want to hear what pushed you over the edge.

You just described my exact path. I still have my gas bike, but it's become a weekend toy for country roads. For the daily grind, I ended up with both an e-scooter and an e-bike with pedals, and honestly, they serve different purposes. The e-bike is great for longer commutes where I want a workout option, and the scooter is my errand runner and quick trip machine. Neither one makes me feel like I'm abandoning riding. It's just a different feeling, and unless you're on an EUC, you don't feel like you need all that heavy gear. That's been huge in summer. Throwing on a helmet and gloves instead of full leathers while stuck in stop-and-go city traffic is a game changer.
The motorcycle is still fun, no question. A twisty backroad with no cars and the engine humming? Nothing beats that. But getting stuck in traffic wearing leather gear in the middle of August is miserable, and that was my reality five days a week. The switch wasn't about boredom. It was about admitting that my weekend joy and my weekday commute didn't have to be the same machine. I'm not selling the bike. I'm just not forcing it to do a job it was never great at. That realization made the decision a lot easier.
